When Should You NOT Refinish Kitchen Cabinets?

Refinishing kitchen cabinets can be a great way to update the look of your kitchen without replacing everything.

But cabinet refinishing isn’t always the right solution.

After more than 23 years working with kitchen renovations, I’ve seen many situations where refinishing works beautifully — and a few where it simply isn’t the best choice.

If you’re considering refinishing your cabinets, here are three situations where you may want to think twice.

1. MDF Cabinet Doors With Water Damage

One of the most common reasons refinishing fails is water damage on MDF cabinet doors.

MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is widely used in cabinet manufacturing because it provides a smooth surface for painted finishes.

However, MDF reacts poorly to moisture.

When water damage occurs, the material can swell or break down internally.

Even if the doors are sanded and repainted, those damaged areas often become weak points.

Over time you may see:

  • paint peeling
  • chipping around damaged areas
  • surface deterioration returning

In these situations, refinishing usually doesn’t last long.

Instead, homeowners are often better off considering cabinet refacing or replacing the doors entirely.

2. Slab Cabinet Doors

Slab cabinet doors are flat, minimalist doors commonly used in modern kitchens.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with refinishing slab doors.

However, there is a practical consideration.

Because slab doors are simple to manufacture, brand-new slab doors are often surprisingly affordable.

In some cases, purchasing new slab doors can cost less than paying a professional to refinish the existing ones.

For this reason, it’s always worth comparing the cost of:

  • refinishing your current slab doors
  • replacing them with new ones

Sometimes replacement is the smarter investment.

3. Arched Cabinet Doors

Arched cabinet doors were extremely popular in kitchens several decades ago.

Today, they often give kitchens a noticeably dated appearance.

Many homeowners hope that refinishing arched doors in a new color will modernize the kitchen.

Unfortunately, in most cases the shape itself still makes the kitchen look older.

Even with a fresh coat of paint, the overall style remains strongly associated with past design trends.

If the goal is to modernize the kitchen or increase resale appeal, refinishing arched doors may not achieve the desired result.

Replacing the doors with a more contemporary style is often a better option.

When Refinishing Your Cabinets Still Makes Sense

Despite these limitations, cabinet refinishing can still be an excellent choice in many situations.

Refinishing works well when:

  • cabinet doors are structurally sound
  • there is no significant water damage
  • the door style still fits the desired design

In these cases, refinishing can dramatically refresh a kitchen at a lower cost than a full renovation.

A Practical Tip Before Refinishing Your Kitchen Cabinets

If you’re considering cabinet refinishing, it’s always a good idea to have a professional evaluate your cabinets first.

A quick inspection can determine:

  • whether the cabinet doors are good candidates for refinishing
  • whether replacing doors or refacing might produce better results
  • how long the refinished surface is likely to last

Making the right choice at the beginning can save both money and frustration later.
